Scottish Terrier Health Survey of 1995 and its place in controlling Scottie health problems
By Linda L. Orsborn

We are fortunate to have a hardy breed of dog, but we do have health concerns that could and should be considered as we share our lives with our dogs and some of us choose to be breeders.

In 1995 the STCA compiled its first comprehensive health survey. Along with a list of genetic problems seen in the Scottish Terrier is a “guesstimate of frequency rate”. The “guesstimate of frequency” indicates the percentage of Scotties that may carry this particular trait. It does not indicate the number of affected dogs. The Hardy-Weinburg rule states there will be approximately 1% affected for every 18% of carriers. Usually the Hardy-Weinberg rule is applied to single gene traits, but for this health survey Dr. George A. Padgett, DVM applied this theory to all guesstimates.

Below is the chart of diseases known to exist in the Scottish Terrier.

Hopefully, the information in this survey will help you to better manage the health of your Scottie. Consider researching some of the diseases listed above and share this survey information with your veterinarian.
