The
Saint Bernard National Archive's Seven
(7)
AKC & SBCA Recognized Venues |
|
From
the time the FIRST traveler was rescued by a Saint Bernard in the Swiss
Alps and taken to the Hospice (photo above), our breed has been setting
records and goals for others to follow. Read about our
breed's history:
Today's events and titles are our way of keeping the history of the breed
alive. It may not be the act of digging out a traveler lost in the
snow, but the events reward and help preserve the conformation, obedience,
tracking, agility, weight pulling, draft work and temperament of the Saint
Bernard. The exhibits in this
room show the many American Kennel Club (AKC) and Saint Bernard Club of
America (SBCA) venues where the Saint Bernards of today
earn titles, set breed firsts and
breed records.
Listed below are the seven different venues in which we track the
accomplishments of today's Saint Bernards. |

1 Agility:
The exciting sport of Agility has taken the
world by storm. The Agility ring allows handler and dog to run full speed,
while having to perform accurately and safely on A-Frames, Dog Walks,
See-Saws and a wide variety of jumps and tunnels.
The sport of Agility for the Saint Bernard reflects back to our
breed's roots.
During the 1700s to 1800s, climbing and maneuvering around mountain
terrains is what our breed did during the many rescue missions in the
Swiss Alps.

2 Conformation: Dogs are
judged against individual breed standards, which have been established for
the AKC-recognized breeds by their parent clubs. These written standards
describe the ideal size, color, and temperament of each breed, as well as
correct proportion, structure, and movement. Good conformation is
basic for good performance. Keep in mind, the Saint Bernard is a
WORKING breed and they love having a job to perform.

3 Obedience:
Obedience training is the foundation upon which all canine activities are
based, whether conformation, agility, tracking, search & rescue, service
dogs, fieldwork, etc. AKC Obedience Trials were developed to foster
training, as well as to demonstrate dogs' willingness, capabilities and
enjoyment of working with and very closely with humans.

Each team is judged on the execution of a single, continuous performance
of numbered exercises on a course, uninterrupted by orders from the judge.
Many of the exercises are derived from "doodles" people use when training
for Obedience.
