The Manchester Terrier In Obedience Although not a traditional
obedience breed, Manchesters are proving themselves to be
competitive in the obedience ring. Maybe it's because training has
evolved to a reward-based method of teaching rather than the
negative reinforcement previously used. What Manchester doesn't
love treats, toys, praise and time spent bonding with their person?
Obedience is the cornerstone of so many other performance
activities--every agility dog needs a certain amount of control
before tackling a course, a Rally dog, of course, is learning the
obedience skills and teamwork necessary for obedience. Tracking, Earthdog, flyball and just being a canine good citizen all require a
basic knowledge of simple obedience. Coming when called, heeling
nicely, sitting and lying down when required are all easily mastered
by a Manchester Terrier and an owner with a pocketful of treats and
toys.
Many Manchester owners start in obedience because they want some house manners or have gotten tired of seeing their Manchester disappear into the depths of the yard when it's time to make a visit to the vet. But somewhere along the line, that spark of understanding appears in the dog's eyes at the sound of a command repeated just "one more time" that makes the difference and the owner is hooked. Realizing the dog understands and wants to perform as requested is thrilling...the owner and dog have embarked on a great journey and each title gained, each hour spent together practicing, each special treat is a marker on that journey towards the ultimate obedience goal: the title of Obedience Trial Champion.
And, yes, Manchesters have their firsts OTCH (Obedience Trial CHampion). These Standard Manchester AKC breed champions are firsts for Manchester Terriers !

You see Manchesters in the conformation ring. Now their presence is becoming more prevalent in the "other" rings at AKC shows/trials. Our wonderful little "Black and Tans" are finding their way more and more into Agility, Obedience, Tracking, Flyball, Earthdog Trials and even becoming wonderful Therapy dogs.
