Water Spaniel Rescue Policies and Procedures
The Irish Water Spaniel Club of America identifies and then rescues any Irish Water Spaniel found in a shelter or homeless. Club Rescue assists other Club members where appropriate or necessary in the rescue and re-home of any Irish Water Spaniel in need.
If the breeder of the animal can be identified the animal is returned to the breeder for placement and the breeder reimburses the Club for any expenses the Club has incurred. If the breeder cannot be identified, then the Club takes on the responsibility for the animal. Foster homes are found. Necessary medical attention, nutrition and grooming care is given. Evaluation of temperament is made. All animals are neutered/spayed as soon as their health permits. Microchipping is done with the Club contact person named as the second contact person after the name of the placement home.
Homes are found for placement that members of the Rescue team feel will be a good fit both for the dog and its new family. Each adoptive home is expected to sign a contract in which they pledge to care for the dog and give it adequate veterinary care and to return the dog to the Club if for any reason the adoptive home cannot continue to care for the animal.
The Club will always take back any Rescue who does not fit into the home into which it has been placed or for any other reason or at any time the family situation does not allow the family to continue to keep the animal. We appreciate a donation being made to Rescue to help defray our costs. We usually require the adoptive home to pay for the spay/neuter and for transportation.
We use a formal application form. The Regional Rescue Coordinator appointed by the Club coordinates the Rescue activity and placement locally. Policy and national matters are handled by the National Coordinator.
