Do your homework; read the standard, and get a sense of what the ideal Bullmastiff should look like and compare it to the dogs produced by the breeders you have selected.

Decide what imperfections are insignificant to you. A long muzzle really doesn’t matter in the long run, but a bad hind end does.

Be advised that the price of a Bullmastiff varies widely from breeder to breeder; be sure that you and the seller are on the same wavelength before committing to purchase.

If you are interested, ask to see the certifications for joints and eyes, and take a look at the thyroid panel. A pedigree going back at least three generations should be yours for the asking.

Once you’ve made the decision, you will most likely be asked for a deposit on the puppy you have reserved. It is quite possible that you will be placed on a waiting list.

When the puppy is ready to go, you should expect to sign a contract; it is for your protection as well as that of the breeder and the pup. It should contain a clause that the dog will return to the breeder if you are unable for any reason to keep it. It may also include a spay/neuter clause to ensure that the dog is not bred. You may be offered a "limited registration" – this simply means that, while the pup is registered with the AKC, it is not being sold for breeding or conformation showing. It will be eligible for any of the AKC sanctioned performance divisions, but its offspring will not be eligible for AKC registration. This assures that only the best dogs will be used for breeding, and is for the protection of the breed.

Once all of the decisions are made, you can devote your energies to preparing the nursery. While you’re waiting, use the time to select a good veterinarian in your area and investigate some reputable trainers so you can find one whose methods (positive reinforcement, please) suit you.
