The Van
Andel Research Institution in Grand Rapids, MI needs
additional DNA samples from Beagles!
The CHCC (Canine Hereditary Cancer
Consortium) is requesting samples from beagles who have
had hemangiosarcoma (usually splenic tumors). We simply
need three mls of whole blood in an EDTA (purple top)
tube.
The PCHP (Program for
Canine Health and Performance) is requesting saliva
samples from Beagles affected with Chondrodysplasia or
Beagle Pain Syndrome/Steroid Responsive Meningitis (SRM).
A free saliva collection kit will be sent to your home,
sampling takes less than 3 minutes.
We are comparing the DNA
of dogs who develop the previously mentioned diseases to
the DNA of dogs who do not have the disease. These DNA
studies are designed to help us develop better treatments,
earlier diagnostics and perhaps DNA tests to serve as
another tool in the breeders' toolbox.
DNA is also needed from
healthy Beagles. Ideally, ‘controls‘ might be from older
dogs, but we would like to collect healthy dogs at all
ages, as certain biases can stem from an exclusive focus
on older dogs. Healthy dogs will be sent buccal cheek
swab kits, which can also be collected at home. Bulk DNA
kits can be sent to clubs, breeders, or groups of owners
willing to collect large sample numbers quickly. Smaller
sets can be sent to individuals by request.
The PCHP and CHCC will
pay for the shipping of samples back to the lab. There is
no cost to participate, and all owner and dog information
is kept strictly confidential.
To request DNA
collection kits, please contact the Program for Canine
Health and Performance by emailing
dogdna@tgen.org
with your mailing address and number of healthy dog kits
and affected dog kits needed.
Please contact Roe
Froman, DVM, for more specific information regarding blood
sample submission. Thank you for your help!
